How to Measure to Fit a Door
If you’ve never replaced a door before, you’re probably wondering how to measure to fit a door. Although it may sound daunting at first, the process is really simple and requires only a few simple tools, including a tape measure, a pencil and our handy door measurement worksheet. With these tools, anyone can accurately measure doors when remodeling or building a new entry way.
Here are the three measurements that are needed:
- Rough Opening Width: This is the smallest measurement found when measuring at the top, center and bottom of the door opening.
- Rough Opening Height: This is the height from the floor to the bottom of the header.
- Wall Width: While most interior walls are 4 9/16″ wide, exterior walls can vary. The width measurement should include the sheeting on each side of the stud, but should not include any of the trim work.
You can use our worksheets to record measurements and details here.
